Cannabis Compliance
Cannabis Compliance and Quality Solutions
- Cannabis in Canada is legal at the federal level for both medical and recreational purposes. In Canada, cannabis is regulated by Health Canada through Cannabis Act and Regulations.
- Cannabis products are divided into different classes. These classes are cannabis plants, cannabis plant seeds, fresh cannabis, dried cannabis, edible cannabis, cannabis extracts, and cannabis topicals.
- In order to conduct activities with cannabis (such as growing, processing, or selling cannabis), a license must be obtained from Health Canada authorizing those activities.

- Micro-cultivation – allows the production of cannabis plants, seeds, and fresh and dried cannabis. Maximum grow surface area up to 200 sqm.
- Standard Cultivation – allows the production of cannabis plants, seeds, fresh cannabis and dried cannabis with no size limit.
- Nursery – allows the production of cannabis plants and seeds for starting materials (genetics). Maximum grow surface area (plant canopy) of 50 sqm for flowering plants but no limit for non-flowering plants
- Micro-processing – allows you to process harvested cannabis and industrial hemp. Only permits 600 Kg of dried flower (or equivalent) to be handled each year.
- Standard-processing – similar to micro-processing license with no limit on cannabis possession (that is no 600kg cap)
- Sale for medical purposes – allows possessing, selling, and distributing cannabis products. However, not allowed to grow or produce cannabis. Usually, cultivators and processors get this license in combination with a cultivation and/or processing license.
- Cannabis Research License – to conduct research activities including but not limited to in vivo and in vitro studies, clinical trials, plant genetics, cannabis product development (e.g., sensory testing), and educational programs.
- Cannabis drug license – This license allows one to possess cannabis, and produce, sell, or distribute drugs containing cannabis. Food and drug regulations such as GMP practices are required to follow and in certain cases, a DEL (drug establishment license) is also required along with a cannabis drug license.
- Cannabis Analytical Testing License – as the name suggests allows analytical testing of cannabis such as chemical contaminants, microbial contaminants, cannabinoids, Dissolution or disintegration, Pesticides, Stability, and others. For the purpose of testing, this license allows us to produce, distribute and sell reference standards and test kits.
- Industrial Hemp License – allows to grow and possess industrial hemp; conduct processing from the grain (such as producing hemp seed oil); and sell industrial hemp. Note that in order to make products from flowering heads, leaves, or branches of industrial hemp (such as the production of CBD oil) a cannabis processing license is required.
